Dress to Remember this September!

A TALE OF TWO DRESSES

Before my trip to the New York Fashion Week, I received a special package in the mail from my favorite online fashion store called Shopbop. I was very excited and appreciative to them as this provided me with beautiful dresses to wear during the fun week! Thanks to them I actually appeared like I knew what I was doing there! I’m no model, but I looked damn fine if I do say so myself! If you knew me you’d know that is something quite out of character for me to say, but I stand by it! The praise and attention I received there thanks to these dresses certainly boosted this feeling.

From the moment I opened the package I was in love. The fabric was smooth to the touch and clearly very high quality. According to the care instructions, the dresses can be machine washed in cool water, hung dry, and with no ironing required. Being my lazy self, I thought that was a nice perk. I couldn’t wait to try them on! I have to admit, I was quite nervous to be attending NYFW for the first time.

Girls, girls, girls, just wanna have fun at NYFW! Check out our separate blog here!

After day one I was relieved because it felt so good walking around amongst such beautiful people in this incredible new wear of mine and to not just fit in, but to hear such generous compliments on my taste in dresses! Little did they know “my taste” in dresses is really Shopbop’s taste in dresses! That being said, I may or may not have been happy to take credit for it. This boosted my confidence, started many conversations, and made it all that much more of a memorable trip.

Marchesa Notte Colorblock Floral-Print One-Shoulder Twisted Ruffle Dress:

I was thrilled to see that was one of the two dresses I received from Shopbop was a Marchesa! They have many stunning floral dresses for spring and summer. You better believe this one will be the first thing in my suitcase anytime I travel during those seasons - and don’t tell anyone but probably the rest of the year too... I don’t care, a beautiful dress is a beautiful dress!

It was interesting to me because it’s made with a thicker nubby linen and is meant to have a “lived in” and imperfect look. Therefore you don’t have to worry about it being a little wrinkled because it’s supposed to be that way! Despite being thicker than your average linen/organza dress (therefore it also isn’t see through) it’s definitely not hot. I will wear this all over Italy in the summer heat! On the flip-side, when it starts to cool down, this would be perfect with a cute wool jacket and ankle booties. When I travel, I want to bring as many “one piece” outfits as possible that do double duty for day and night. This is definitely one of them. You can dress it up or dress it down!

I wore this for two events at NYFW. First during the Fashion Trade Show (powered by The Society) and then the Kate Spade show. These are both formal events so I matched the dress with stiletto heel sandals which made it look nice and fancy.

Afterwords I had to run to Soho to meet my cousin and his girlfriend for lunch and had no time to really change to something more casual. I switched my stilettos to Stuart Weitzman’s semi flat close toe pumps, added a jean jacket and tadah! I was able to pull off “dressing it down”. It could also be worn with white sneakers (these are the one’s I recommend that go with everything and are so comfy), with flats, and with wedges!

Monique Lhuillier Jacquard Cocktail Dress with Tiered Skirt:

I love everything by designer Monique Lhuillier, not just because we’re both of Filipino heritage, but because she is one talented lady! This super cute blue midi is very versatile yet a totally different look from the Marchesa!

This time I chose to wear a classic and black pair of sandals from Stuart Weitzman. They were shockingly comfortable and looked great with the dress! Purse wise I went with a Yves Saint Laurent. Lastly I chose Nyx Classic Red lipstick.

I’ve been getting a lot of requests for versatile dress ideas. I’m happy to report this is one you’ll want to move in, unpack, change your mailing address and live in for the next several months! With its relatively high price tag, I expected this dress to be of high quality and it was. It’s very well-made and I’d say worth it if you love to invest in good quality clothes to last.

This dress (and the Marchesa) was truly “true-to-size”. I chose my normal size and it fit like a glove! Monique structured the dress to fit your body perfectly and enhance your shape, at least I thought it did for me. Despite the deep V, one can get away with or without wearing a bra. The bodice does have some padding and a little support. I wore this to three shows that required formal attire; Bevza, Prabal Gurung and Nicole Miller followed by two swanky after parties. The structure and material is heavy so it’s somewhat difficult to dress it down, but for the events I attended, or a nice dinner or date, I think this dress is perfect!

I feel like I got pretty lucky, not just to get these two dresses, but to really enjoy both of them. If you end up trying them yourself, let me know what you think.I think you’ll be happy, but in the words of LeVar Burton, you don't have to take my word for it.
